The old cowboy town of Acuña, Mexico is located just across the river from Del Rio, Texas and easily accessible by car or truck. It’s too far to park and walk, so plan on taking your vehicle. Be sure you have insurance coverage for driving in Mexico before you go. Once in town there is ample parking in guarded parking facilities costing from $3 to $5 a day.
There are many Dentists in Acuña and their numbers continue to grow each year as many tourists and Texans take advantage of inexpensive and professional dental care.
I happened to meet up with Royce Vick, a Baptist missionary to Mexico, who was bringing some Texas friends to Acuña for dental work.
He and his family are routinely seen by Dr.DIsmael Rodriguez Guajardo D.D.S.
He is a pediatric dentist and oral surgeon who has been practicing in Acuña for many years. He mentioned the local dental association has grown over the years and many of the patients are U.S. citizens.Acuña is a safe border town patrolled by tourist police that are there to help you.
Most speak English and can assist you with directions and information. Like most border towns, there are many restaurants and shops to explore.
Del Rio, Texas and Acuña have a special relationship being the only border crossing having an annual parade that crosses one side of the bridge to the other. Both cities have cultivated a friendship with deep historical roots.Next week I’ll take you to New Progresso, Mexico where the food is excellent and the dental care is great!

I go a great dentist, Dr Angela Acuna, in Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point). Her clinic is called Rocky Smiles. Dental work is a little higher there than in Los Algodones, but well worth it if you spend winters in or near Ajo AZ and want to avoid the Yuma metropolis. SKP 23051
We were in Del Rio this year for the international parade. It no longer crosses the border due to increased security but many Acuna residents attend with floats and bands. There is free parking on the U.S. side at the bridge and a short walk across the border to Acuna.
When it comes to health issues I stick with known and trusted entities. Why risk your most precious asset to save a few bucks. Your health is priceless.
There has been no mention of dentist in Tacate, BC, Mex. I use Dr Gabriel Adame who has been practicing there for 30 years. His wife and son are also in his practice. Excellent work in a very clean and modern facility. I have also had dental work done in South Africa and Venezuela, all high quality. The US is not the only place in the world with high quality dental work.
I live along the Border nearly year around. I have begun going south of the border because the costs are a quarter what they are in the States, and the treatments use exactly the same equipment and techniques. I use Mexicali, Mexico, as I live in El Centro, California. Across from Yuma, Arizona is also a large number of dentists and other legitimate medical treatment available. I recommend the concept without qualification. Bill Burton, El Centro, Ca

I am not recommending any particular dentist either in the U.S.A or Mexico because of liability issues. I am simply providing the phone numbers of a few dentists I interviewed as requested. Jim Twamley
Al said, "Your health is priceless."
Wish that were true. Years ago (when I had dental insurance), after learning about the problems associated with metal fillings, I sought to have mine replaced with the safer, more advanced (natural-colored) material. The coverage was denied as "elective."
Now that one of these fillings has finally cracked the tooth (and I no longer have insurance) I'm looking at $3000 to fix it. From information on this blog it looks like it could cost $500 in Mexico.
So health care, it seems, is actually the opposite of priceless and is in fact, quite "priceful."
Hello, folks:
Very interesting, the comments re: Mexican dentistry experiences. Lest the fear-mongers scare away the unaware, let me mention a point or two: As a 30-year paramedic from the So Cal border area, I can attest: anyone who thinks there is more "danger" south of the border simply isn't paying attention to the appalling daily U.S. violence. We medics see it every single day. There are few cities indeed,in America, safer than Algodones. Yes, Tijuana can be scary. But don't even think about comparing it to Los Angeles in shameful human brutality. Or Detroit, or Phoenix, or Denver, or San Fran., or Chicago, or . . . you get the picture. There are simply no more bloodthirsty, carnivorous humans on the planet than we are. Pity.
Extremely interesting and useful series - thanks!
I would be very interested in testimonials from those who have undergone elaborate procedures (endodontics and prosthodontics) with Mexican dental specialists.
I am overdue for extensive root canal and bridgework/implants and would love to hear from someone who is delighted with their results.
I am in Georgia, but could readily travel to the right place if the visits could be kept to a minimum.
Thanks again!
I would like to know if there are any dentist in Progresso that do oral surgery while under an anesthetic. I need all of my upper teeth extracted due to chemotherapy. Does any one have any knowledge or experience with this type of dentistry.
I'm spending quite a bit of time in Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, Mex. The town is about 9 miles south of Weslaco, Tx.
I've become acquainted with Dra. Dominga Cortez, DDS, of the Texas Dental Clinic.
I wholeheartedly recommend her and her staff for their friendliness, professionalism, and quality care.
I can go on and on about how clean and modern the facility is or how nice Dra. Dominga is but here's an example of the lengths they go to in order to meet your needs. I was in her practice one day when it became obvious that an US customer from Wisconsin would need the attention of a specialist (bone grafts, I believe). Since the specialty wasn't readily available and the client was leaving for his hometown within a few days a specialist FLEW IN FROM MEXICO CITY the very next day! How's that for service????
I'm not seeing much about gum disease treatments with regard to the Mexican dentist. My dentist here in the USA says I need work done immediately due to the rampant infection but my dental insurance is maxed out. I don't know what this is going to cost in the U.S. but need to know of any dentists in Mexico specializing in these procedures.
