RV dental tourism in Mexico - Part II

RVers have been taking advantage of Mexican dentistry for years. The work is excellent, fast and about a third the cost of U.S. and Canadian dentistry. The responses to the first installment of this series raised some questions I will address in this article.

Jody Brandvold from Brooklyn Center, Minnesota has been RVing to Mesa, Arizona for 11 years and has been receiving dental care in Mexico for over five years. She says she is not nervous at all about the experience saying her doctor is competent, does great work and is gentle. Jody said, “I went to my dentist back home in Minnesota and was quoted over $5,000 and I was able to get the same work done here for about $500.”Blaine an Luella Anderson from Wellsville, Utah are staying at a local RV park in their travel trailer. Luella said she had a complete dental makeover done in Los Algodones three years ago and remains very pleased with the work. Blane tells me he had seven crowns, a new partial and bonding on six of his front teeth, “I figure I saved six thousand dollars compared to back home.”There is a common misconception that Mexican dentists attend dental school in the U.S. but in fact the majority attend dental college at a Mexican university. After graduation and residency some will attend U.S. universities like UCLA or Loma Linda Dental Colleges for post graduate studies.Dentists in Los Algodones accept cash, checks and many take credit cards. Be sure to ask about payment options before you get in the chair.

One of the great advantages to receiving dental care in Mexico is the speed at which they get things done. They use their time wisely and get you in and out quickly while maintaining high standards of professional service. If you are planning on having implant work, keep in mind that after the surgery you must return in three months to have a crown attached to the post.

Tony & Kay Coletta from Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin have a park model in Phoenix and have been coming to the dentist in Los Algodones for the past three years. Tony was recommended by his cousin who experienced bad work from a U.S. dentist and came to Mexico to have it fixed. He was very pleased with the work and brought the old crown back to the U.S. dentist and received a full refund.

Peggy Arthur from Phoenix, Arizona says of the Mexican dentists, “They don’t hurt you! It’s the best experience I’ve ever had in a dental chair.” She’s been coming here for two years and is a satisfied customer. “And it’s fun,” says Peggy who has friends who come here from as far away as Alaska to get their dental work done at a fraction of the cost.

You may drive across the boarder, but be sure you have Mexican insurance. If you are transporting someone with a handicap this is the best option to use.It costs $2.00 for parking in town and there is about a one hour wait to exit back across to the U.S. side of the border. You can also pay to park in the Indian reservation parking lot and walk across. The town is wheel chair accessible. There are also clean and comfortable hotels located in town within easy walking distance of your dental appointments.

Los Algodones is a safe town with ample security and tourist police. The dental association and other businessmen want to keep Los Algodones clean, safe and a respected haven of dental, audiology and optometry care for both U.S. and Canadian patients. They are not tolerant of any illegal activity by the locals that might in any way soil the reputation of their town. So in that sense, this is not a typical Mexican border town.

There are also many cost saving pharmacies located in Los Algodones. And while you're in town pick up a couple souvenirs from the local vendors.
Blaine & Luelia Anderson are from Redvers a small town located in southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada. I met Luelia when she wandered into my dentist’s office while I was waiting for my appointment. She looked bewildered and when I asked her how she was doing, she told me her story. After she recovered from a mild stroke her dentures no longer fit properly. She told me she went to a couple of dentists in Canada and had four different sets of dentures made but none of them fit properly. She was about to give up on the idea of having a decent set of dentures. I introduced her to my dentist, Dr. Janira Rodarte who immediately took her in for an examination. About 10 minutes later I see Dr. Janira taking Luelia by the arm and leading her out of the office and down the street. When Dr. Janira returned she told me she had taken her to a specialist in geriatric dentistry.

Two weeks later I ran into Blaine & Luelia at the audiologist office where Blaine was being fitted for a hearing aid (I’ll say more about optometry and audiology services in Part V of this series). I was delighted to see Lueila smiling and happy and she was equally happy to see me. She said, “Thank you so much for insisting I see your dentist. After she examined me she took me to Dr. Sam Galaviz. He took me in right away and began working. I came back after lunch for some additional measurements and by 4:00 O’clock I had a new pair of dentures that fit perfectly. I’ll never go back to a Canadian dentist again!” What are the chances you’d get this kind of personal service in the U.S. or Canada?

If you have trouble with your dental work, for whatever reason, the dentists of Los Algodones will work with you to make it right. They want you to be satisfied with your dental work and pride themselves on doing their best for you.

Hello Jim,
what a great topic. When wintering near Douglas AZ, I developed toothache that I knew needed root canal tx. I checked with locals and was directed to a root canal specialist in Agua Prieta. The office under direction of Dr Gilberto Tostado. There is a telephone number in Douglas AZ, so no long distance charges. What a state of the art office, and once the dentist knew I was retired dental assistant, I got a tour of the facility. Equipment was so advanced I was amazed. Very efficient and gentle treatment. Sterilisation techniques beyond anything at home. I had root canal and crown completed for $1000.00. It would have cost about $3000. in ALberta. Insurance claim was completed for me, and I have a quote for 3 more crowns that is good for 5 years!
I recommend them.

TIJUANA, Mexico — The bodies of nine decapitated men have been found in a vacant lot in Tijuana, part of a wave of violence that has claimed at least 23 lives in less than 24 hours in this border city.

A Baja California state police statement says the bodies were found Sunday in a poor Tijuana neighborhood, across from San Diego. The heads were discovered in plastic bags near the bodies. Three police identification cards were also found in the bags.

Five more people were shot to death in four attacks throughout Tijuana on Sunday.

Police say nine people, including a 4-year-old, were killed in three separate attacks late Saturday.

Drug turf battles have fueled a wave of violence that has swept through Tijuana and other Mexican cities.

Not sure what that story about Tijuana has to do with the posting about Los Algadones and dentist work!! Algadones is truly aimed at catering to the snowbirders and is vastly different from Tijuana in who each caters too. Felt very safe in Algadones and very satisfied with my dental work I had done. Even my dentist here in the states (high priced!!) felt that it was good work. I figure that even if I have to have it redone every 2 - 4 years, I'm still money ahead of the game!!

The "point" is, Ron, that this is typical of the violence in ALL of the border towns along the U.S./Mexico border. I suppose one could ignore it and take their chances as many have done and tell others what a nice, wonderful place south of the border is simply because nothing nasty has ever happened to THEM....the U.S. State Department doesn't publish "nasty grams" about Mexican border towns just to piss off the Mexicans. They are published for a reason, senor.....
I'm sure you could get a really good deal on a re-shoe job for your camel in downtown Baghdad too but I don't think I'd want to go there to save a few bucks....on the other hand YOU might get lucky and Hamid might be the nicest guy around.....your mileage may vary...

I doubt Anonymous has been to ALL of the border towns, and likely hasn't even been to more than a couple, or would not have posted such inaccurate, and marginally irrelevant information.

Even 30 years ago, Tijuana was a uniquely different city the rest of Mexico. While I too would recommend staying away from that area, extrapolating their identity to the enitre U.S./Mexico border is simply ridiculous.

If you have something valuable to contribute in regards to dentistry, Anon, please do so. But spare us the conjectural fearmongering.

I have visited many Mexican border towns (other than TJ) and find them quite delightful.

What I don't find delightful is not being able to afford dental work which I need. So I can either stay in the U.S. and wait until I can afford it, sacrificing my dental health, or I can fly down to Arizona, rent a car, stay in a hotel, enjoy a mini vacation in Mexico, and get it done now. I have to say the idea is intriguing...and I for one am very thankful for the option this blog series has given me.

With the opportunity to visit, enjoy and have dental work done in Los Algadones, Acuna, and most recently Progresso, in the Rio Grande Valle; I have to endorse and recommend that anyone needing, optometry, hearing and or dental work, go, without hesitation or worry to any of these cities who derive most of their income from visiting Norte Americanos in the winter months, not from being drug or people smugglers. The Mexican people are for the greater part of them, kind, considerate and courteous; more so than far to many of their visitors. Act as you would like to be treated, you will be.

Please look into the website cancercured.org and see what could happen and what problems can occur if certain proceedures are done when you have your teeth worked on

Daryl: And your point is ???

The point is is that if you have a root canal or tooth caps put on there is bacteria that will start growing in the dead tooth that produces toxins that the researchers found that does cause cancer and other physical problems as well. If you look on their website (cancercured.org) they get into explicit details about the bacteria growth and what they found it can cause.
The book they prsent (Am I Dead, or do I just feel like it)was written by a fella who owned a newspaper in North Carolina. Before he came to interview Dr Dowling (researcher of this)he had his second heart attack. After he recovered somewhat he was able to do the interview. Dr Dowling asked if he could do a test on him, which he permitted, and found a bacteria growth on his left jaw side (previous root canal)which caused the toxins to effect his heary. Dr Dowling ended up totally curing the this guy without any drugs or medications. This guy is in his mid sixties and he now feels like a teenager. If you get into the book he gives explicit details of what he found and how he cured him.
This institution has healed thousands of people so far, especially those who had cancer and their radiation/chemo failed to where their doctors told them to go home and plan to die.
All of these problems they have been able to connect with oral pythology problems.
Yes is seams odd that a tooth thing would cause this, but they have proven it and found ways to help cure people without drugs, surgery or radiation.

Hi, Daryl --

Can you get cancer from root canals and caps (crowns) only when they're done in Mexico or can you get cancer when the work is done in the states?

I've been to Los Algodones four times and have had five extractions, one root canal, six implants, one sinus boost, and eighteen crowns. My Seattle dentist can't find anything to complain about (except maybe loss of income!).

If anyone reading this would like a copy of the 30-page journal from my first trip in October, 2006, email me at my Yahoo.com address (SuzanneFromSeattle).

i also had my new crown put in by Dr Gilberto Tostado in agua prieta. that was 5 years ago and its fine as ever. it looks perfect too. my friends in bisbee told me about him so i flew down from seattle where the crown alone was going to cost me 1500. i also had my teeth cleaned and some cavaties filled. all for around 500 plus the cost of the plane fair. but i had friends to visit anyway.

another time i traveled in mexico w/my child for 2 months and had no problem. mexico is a very wonderful society. yes they may have crime, but there is crime in the US too.

Hey All!
My name is Michele, & I just found you tonight! I'm happy I did! Here's my story......

I am a 45-year-old single mother of 3 boys(Young men now), & I'm severely disabled from a car accident 20-years-ago this April(Spinal injuries & deterioration). I was a passenger. I had dentures put in 7-years-ago, but I fell asleep one night with them still in, and when I woke up, they were gone. I found them under my bed, making our new puppy very happy. I have not had teeth now for 4 years.
I am now able to get a new set, but I was looking at the titanium implants that the dentures are made to fit over. They put 4 implants each in the upper & lower jaws, then the dentures have places that fit over the "Balls" of the implants and kind of lock in place.
My question is this:
Does anybody know of a reputable dentist south of the Phoenix border who does these procedures?
I also am a house-bound "Shut-In". My tiny car won't transport my electric wheelchair, so this is another hurdle for me. I would need to rent a wheelchair somewhere by the border, and I would need to be picked up on the US side and transported to the dentist. I realize these are quite a few hurdles, but I need this. Once the teeth hurdle is finished, then somehow I can work on getting something that will hold my wheelchair, as I have not had a social life of any kind since I was 32-years-old! Do the math! That's 13-years since I've even flirted with a man, not that anybody really wants to hear about that. LoL! I don't know why I'm even telling this to strangers...?
This Blog just spoke to me and gave me a tiny glimmer of light in the long, dark, lonely tunnel I've been in for so long.
So if anybody out there has any ideas for me, I would surly appreciate it, more than you'll ever know!
By the way, I used to be a once-a-month camper/RV'r when my kids were small and I could still move. Just FYI. I sure miss that!
Well, I KNOW I've already said too much, so I'll close now and pray for some answers.

Many Blessings to you ALL!

Michele: I can only recommend one in Los Algodones, actually two, a Dr Luis S. Horigome and his daughter Dra Clarissa Salazar two blocks from the gate, 1/2 block to the right, address 261 Ave. B, Suite 7 Algodones Pharmacia Complex. It is on the second floor, but I think there maybe an elevator, it's been three years now, but he is an expert at cosmetic dental work ! I have friends and myself to attest to it. Also just talked today to a friend who has gone to him for years who has an appointment for tomorrow, he's staying somewhere in Yuma in his fifth wheel, but calls regularly. Both Dentists are extremely gentle, careful and Luis speaks fairly good English, he himself is Japanese and Mexican and has a diploma from University of Indiana; not the cheapest, but very very reasonable and best work I've ever had. I'm sorry about the rest of the difficulty. I no longer live in that area preferring South Texas, however perhaps someone else will step up to the plate. BTW his telephone number is 011-52-658-517-7311, call for an appointment, please. no Sunday work. His laboratory is/was in the same building, so everything is quick and convenient. Good luck, but more, may God bless you.
