Galen Froelich enjoys RVing in his Coachmen Cross Country motorhome, but he didn’t want to be caught without a spare. He decided to mount a spare tire with a wheel to the receiver hitch.
The wheel is mounted to a vertical brace that is welded and bolted in place on a standard drop down receiver hitch extension.
Here is a closer look at how it is put together.
Galen has no illusions about changing a tire himself, but he says it is easier for the towing company to change a tire without having to find one in stock and taking a lot of extra time and effort.
With this setup he can be back on the road faster and without having to pay the going price for a new tire.He has a lock on one of the tire retaining bolts (but we all know it won’t stop a determined thief).
His tow bars fit into the receiver hitch extension like normal and he has the piece of mind of knowing he is prepared.
As far as I’m concerned, I’m trying to work off my spare tire - Jim Twamley, Professor of RVing

Not a bad idea, but what does that do for CCC weight and rear axle weight and towing weight. I have seen spares put in/on the toad and also under diesel pusher by rear axle also. JG
Agree with the comment. I have a 36ft Foretravel Grand Villa. Carry the spare in my toad. When exteded stay, take it out to allow for extra passengers
Great idea to have the tire already mounted on a wheel but will the spare wheel fit both front and rear? Will it fit the steering axle, rear inner and rear outer? Or is it better to carry just a spare tire in the same location?
when you run tires the size of 295 80 22.5, you do not have room to carry it. even now with larger tires you definitely dont have room. TGF ERS.
by the way, if have tire on there for long time, dry rot etc.

We learned the hard way...Stuck in the middle of no where land and no tires available for our Winnebago Diesel Pusher. We drove our toad (Saturn) to Charleston, WV to buy 2 new truck tires for the front. Dealer said we could not fit them in the Saturn...But we proved him wrong. Now we carry a new 22.5 in our toad. We found out going on the back roads just how hard it is to find an RV tire.
